Demystifying UAE Corporate Tax & VAT: A Guide for New Businesses

Demystifying UAE Corporate Tax & VAT: A Guide for New Businesses

The UAE has historically been known as a tax-free haven. While it remains one of the most tax-efficient jurisdictions in the world, the introduction of VAT and Corporate Tax means new business owners must prioritize financial compliance from day one.

Value Added Tax (VAT)

Introduced in 2018, VAT is set at a standard rate of 5%.

  • Mandatory Registration: Required if your taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 per year.
  • Voluntary Registration: Available if your supplies or expenses exceed AED 187,500. Registering early can be beneficial for claiming back VAT on your startup expenses.

Corporate Tax

Effective since June 2023, the UAE implemented a federal Corporate Tax on business profits.

  • The Rate: 9% on taxable income exceeding AED 375,000.
  • Small Business Relief: Profits below this threshold are subject to a 0% rate.
  • Free Zone Exceptions: Qualifying Free Zone Persons (QFZP) can still benefit from a 0% corporate tax rate on “Qualifying Income,” provided they meet strict substance requirements and adhere to transfer pricing rules.

Staying compliant requires proper bookkeeping. Setting up cloud accounting software and retaining an auditor right after your company formation ensures you won’t face heavy penalties when the financial year ends.
